About my "American Sentinel" Photograph
This Photograph was taken near Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park in 2018. The Title of this image “American Sentinel” seemed to almost title itself. Although we have Bison in Oklahoma, to see these large animals in the wild is a truly awe-inspiring sight.
Bison in Yellowstone make up the largest North American herds on public land in the world. The bison have been roaming freely in Yellowstone since prehistoric times. The two primary breading herds consist of around 5400 animals and were brought back from almost extinction from overhunting in the 1800s. They have been brought back to their current population by an extensive conservation effort. Male Bison like the one in this photo can weigh up to 2000 pounds and live up to 20 years.
